To Season or Not to Season

There are many stereotypes about black and white culture, one stereotype that sticks out the most is the food we eat and cook. White culture has been known for cooking with light seasoning or no seasoning at all. Whether its meat, vegetables or salad (potato, chicken, tuna, etc.) white culture is known for using the basics of seasoning: salt and pepper.

Although there’s nothing wrong with salt and pepper, there are hundreds of different herbs, spices and seasonings to use with our cooking to “spice things up.” Not only do seasonings add flavor, but also visual and textural appeal.

White people are known for trying to immerse ourselves into other cultures. Some examples are music, fashion, dancing, and language, but one area we lack in is food. Many other cultures use an abundance of seasonings in their meals that make them so delectable, but white culture just seems to not want to experience it.

Out of all the cultural areas we immerse ourselves in I feel as though food should definitely be one of the most important. Food brings families together and by experiencing meals with new flavors not only can it bring everyone together, but also educate us about different cultures.

Go visit Ashleigh’s post "Food for The Soul" and find out her answers to these questions on "Black People" stereotypes.

  1. Why does black culture fry all their food?
  2. How do you feel about the stereotype of ‘black people’ food? (fried chicken, watermelon, Kool-Aid, lemonade)

Below the questions are my answers to her questions.

1. Why must white people feel it necessary to put raisins in everything? (ex. potato salad)

I personally do not enjoy raisins in any savory foods, but I believe white people feel that it adds a sweet flavor with their savory food. Also another reason might be to add a healthy factor into their foods so that they feel like its not as unhealthy as just regular old salad.

2.  What is the reason behind only using salt and pepper as your main seasoning with cooking?

I believe white people have overly sensitive taste buds and therefore only use the minimum when seasoning food. Or they're just ignorant to other seasonings, for example I was watching chopped the other day and a little white boy said, "I'm not going to add seasoning to the meat because I think there's enough flavor in my cheese sauce." He ended up getting chopped first. Most white people think this way when cooking and end up with very bland, tasteless food.
