Growing Up White

Growing up in a white household verses a black household has its similarities, but also its differences. One similarity we've all experienced is asking our parent to go to McDonald's and them saying, "no we got food at home."

Talking Back

A big difference between black and white households is talking back to your parents. I have had white friends who talk back to their parents and the parents ignore it. Also when responding to parents is different. When my parents ask me to come to them I respond "what" and they tell me what they want. When my black friends dad said my name and I responded "what" he looked at me like I was crazy.


Discipline

Another difference is discipline. My parents would make us sit on the steps for a few hours if we misbehaved. Some other white parents might take away TV or other electronics from their kids or just sternly talk to them.

Turn Down For What?! (Black People Music Version)

Love For Music via GIPHY The love for music runs deep within the Black community; it is all around us. Back in the day, music started as a way to portray a message of self-expression. Still to this day, our music has been able to speak volumes while having a good beat to rock to. Now there is a common misconception that ' Black people only listen to Rap, Hip Hop, and R&B'  when that is definitely not true. Our music palette is much more diverse than what people think. Some genres that most African Americans enjoy listening to are: Blues Jazz Gospel Hip Hop R&B  Pop Rap/Trap Music Now the type of genres a person likes to listen to can also depend on their age group as well. White Athletes Sports Participation

Since the start of sports in America only white athletes were allowed to participate in sports such as football, baseball, basketball, soccer, field hockey, softball etc. Around the 1950's that all changed when Jackie Robinson became the first black man to enter the baseball field and help make a path for black athletes all over the world to enter white dominated sports.  In present day sports both basketball and football are dominated by black athletes. They fill 80% of the NBA roster and 67% of the NFL roster.
