Let's Talk: Black & White

Since the start of sports in America only white athletes were allowed to participate in sports such as football, baseball, basketball, soccer, field hockey, softball etc. Around the 1950's that all changed when Jackie Robinson became the first black man to enter the baseball field and help make a path for black athletes all over the world to enter white dominated sports.  In present day sports both basketball and football are dominated by black athletes. They fill 80% of the NBA roster and 67% of the NFL roster. It's not that white athletes in these sports aren't good, but they aren't trying out for the sport in high school or college where they will get noticed by scouts.  via GIPHY In one survey taken at a high school 40% of the black students played basketball while only 15% are white. Throughout history, African Americans have repeatedly been in situations where they have to prove themselves worthy or capable of performing certain actions. A wise man once told me, "In life, you will always have to work harder than the next person just because you're black". This is why achievements are so highly celebrated in the black community; also where the term ' Black Excellence ' comes from. From The Beginning Ever since back in a day, Blacks were only looked at as being useful for sports; basketball and football specifically. So we took that and ran with it.
